Stony Brook OB/GYN Residency Program

Overview

The residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a University based training program within the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and University Medical Center. The residency in OB/GYN is a fully accredited four year training program with a total of 16 residents (4 residents per year for 4 years of training). The residents are trained in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology and we stress the importance of the Obstetrician/Gynecologist as the primary care provider for women. Residents completing our program are expected to either pursue a fellowship for a career in academic medicine or pursue a clinical practice.

Our residents possess independent initiative, enthusiasm, creativity, and scholarly talents to excel in our field. The goal of the residency training program is to produce physicians who have a solid knowledge base and excellent clinical skills to be leaders in our field, regardless of the type of practice they pursue. Our graduates possess the necessary skills not only to excel in patient care, participate in research and education. We do so with a very structured training program that emphasizes the learning aspects of our discipline and minimizes the amount of service work. The support staff allows physicians to maximize their time spent learning and minimize the amount of extracurricular work ("scut").

Our field is an ever changing field and we have remained very proactive in our approach to resident education. We constantly evaluate our training program and make the necessary adjustments to continue to be on the "cutting edge" of resident education. Each year we have a department wide faculty retreat to discuss the future directions of our training program and to make all the necessary changes to accomplish our goals. We are constantly searching for ways to improve, and we consider the resident input paramount in this process.

The Department

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine is composed of the following divisions: General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Education Division. Each of the divisions provides a broad spectrum of services and complete clinical experiences. The Department is well represented by a solid full-time faculty as well as a very committed voluntary faculty that teach and closely supervise all resident activities. We continue to stress the importance of primary care in the training of our residents and have a very active and well designed resident continuity clinic to provide this care to these patients. The residents see their patients in a new, well equipped ambulatory suite and practice patient continuity care with dedicated nursing and clerical staff committed to assisting the resident physician in providing patients with high quality, humanistic and personal care. At the present time all residency training currently takes place at University Medical Center although, we have been actively trying to expand this and include some rotations at some of the local hospitals to broaden the exposure for the residents. Each year the Department has approximately 10,500 ambulatory care visits, 3,500 deliveries and 1,500 surgical procedures are taught by the faculty using state of the art procedures including advanced operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, microsurgery, radical surgery and laser just to name a few. All patients admitted to University Medical Center are considered teaching cases and are attended by the resident service.

Structure of the Resident Training Program

The residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a fully accredited four-year training program that accepts four residents per year. The curriculum is comprised of clinical rotations, didactic conferences, continuity clinic education, and research training. The core lecture series that are part of the didactic conferences are modeled after the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) learning objectives for OB/GYN residents and includes almost 100 lectures on the various topics. In addition, we ossess a state of the art learning center composed of computers for computer-enhanced learning, word processing, slide making, and internet connections including Medline searches. We also have a videotape and audiotape library on various topics in our specialty for additional learning opportunities.
