Stony Brook OB/GYN Residency Program

Conferences

In order to best prepare the resident for the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology, weekly conferences are scheduled to emphasize not only clinical care but a formal didactic teaching program. The majority of these conferences are held on Wednesday mornings but also Friday mornings as well. The residents are expected to attend the various conferences and are to be protected as much as possible during this time by the faculty for this purpose.

Core Lecture Series

This continuing series of lectures is modeled after the CREOG guidelines for residency training. There are approximately 100 lectures that repeat every 18 months. They are given on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 8:00 a.m. The course reviews the pathophysiology, diagnosis, disease assessment, and management of the disease processes treated by Obstetrician/Gynecologists as well as topics on practice management and Ethical concerns.

Pathology Conference

Every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. Dr. Carmen Tournos presents interesting and provocative cases for the residents to evaluate. The forum is always light and very educational. Resident participation is mandatory. Disease management and follow up is frequently discussed. This has been one of the most highly regarded of all the conferences.

Grand Rounds

Traditional academic grand rounds. Advanced topics are presented by distinguished professors from all over the country. This conference is not only attended by all the residents but the entire staff is also encouraged to attend. Wednesdays at 8:00 a.m. is reserved for this event except during the months of July and August. On a quarterly basis this time is devoted to Primary Care Grand Rounds in a joint conference with the Departments of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. In the chief year, residents present a topic of their choice as part of the Grand Rounds Series.

Chairman's Rounds

This weekly conference is attended by the residents and the entire staff and has become an integral part of our Continued Quality Improvement program. Interesting and/or problematic cases are presented by the residents to the Chair or his/her designee to discuss in an open forum. Audience participation is encouraged. This conference takes place on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.

Journal Club

Each month, current articles in the literature are selected for review and discussion by the residents at the home of one of the faculty members. It offers the residents an opportunity to meet the faculty in an informal after hours setting as well as learn about the current literature and how to critically and analytically review published articles. Frequently discussions about statistics or study design are brought up and function to teach the residents about research and publishing.

Research Meetings

These conferences are held on a quarterly basis for the residents to present to the faculty and the other residents their research plans, study design and data. Although a relatively new conference, the residents have found it very helpful in the creation of their mandatory research projects.

Perinatal Conference

This weekly conference is attended by the residents, the MFM faculty, and the neonatal team to discuss interesting cases and difficult management plans. The cases are presented by the residents.

GYN Oncology Treatment Planning Conference

This weekly conference is attended by the GYN ONC residents and the entire division of Gynecologic Oncology to review patients to be treated during the current week or patients that require a disposition. This is a fabulous opportunity for the residents to learn about the thought process that goes into setting a treatment plan and the complexity of the care provided to these patients.

Weekly Resident Meeting

Every Friday at 8:30 the residents get together to meet with the Residency Coordinator to discuss any issues related to the residency. It is a great opportunity for the residents to voice their concerns and to discuss any potential changes in the residency program with the Residency Coordinator directly.

Resident Research Day

Once a year the residents, faculty and alumni get together to have the residents present their research projects. Each resident is expected to complete and present 2 such projects during their residency. The chief residents are expected to review each of these projects and to evaluate the research. Many of these projects go on to be published or presented at national meetings. It is the culmination of the academic year for the residents.
